The backdrop behind the characters is one I’ve used in multiple settings. It was originally constructed for the “hallway” scenes, but I’ve decided it’s useful as a generic backdrop for scenes that take place in the S-Team’s headquarters. I use the “angled” doors to delineate sequences that take place there as opposed to someplace else. The Conference Room and Monitor Room sets also have these doors.

Obviously, the architect for the Fabulous S-Building watched too much Star Trek as a kid.

“Stinging foam” is another Mystery Men reference. The last panel of this strip reminds me a little of a scene from Monty Python’s Life of Brian, where Brian shouts out of the window “You are all individuals!”, and the crowd replies, dutifully, as one “Yes, we are all individuals.”

Come on, you knew this would be too much fun to keep just between Science Guy and Sandstorm, right? The more the merrier, I always say. Smokescreen’s “Mama pajama!” is a tip of the hat to Mystery Men, where the same line is uttered by Ben Stiller (Mr. Furious). Mystery Men is a big inspiration for the superhero-type humor I present here in AST. If you haven’t seen it, maybe you should.

The use of a multiply repeated phrase is a device that was often used by Charles Schulz in the Peanuts strip. In this case, I just wanted to say “it made me grow big boobs” as many times as possible. The reference to the manual is a tip of the hat to the movie Mystery Men. There is a scene where the heroes are examining a non-lethal weapon invented by a mad genius and one of the characters says “Oh, look, a manual!” It strikes me as very funny that an inventor would go to the trouble of writing a huge manual for an experimental device.

Helen Parr (Elastigirl) said “I don’t think you’re striking the proper tone here.” Yes, one word is different, but my intention was that quote. I loved The Incredibles. It is probably one of my top two or three favorite movies of all time. It’s the first time a superhero movie was made right.
